How to Compare Auto Transport Quotes

Compare business role, price status, dates, insurance, payment and cancellation terms before booking.

Direct answer

A useful quote states whether the business is a broker or motor carrier, identifies the priced service and vehicle, explains whether a carrier has accepted the load, shows the total and payment schedule, and defines pickup, delivery and cancellation terms. The lowest teaser number is not automatically the lowest dispatchable price.

What changes the result?

A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:

  • Broker versus motor carrier
  • MC and USDOT identifiers
  • Estimate versus accepted carrier price
  • Pickup and delivery windows
  • Deposit, balance, cancellation and insurance

Use one scope for every quote

Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.

  1. Search the business in FMCSA records
  2. Compare the same vehicle and service
  3. Read price-change and cancellation terms
  4. Retain the order, inspection and payment records

Compare the same shipment

Give each business the same cities or ZIP areas, dates, exact vehicle, operability, transport type and access constraints. Otherwise the totals do not represent the same service.

Identify who is quoting

FMCSA says brokers arrange transportation while motor carriers transport the vehicle. Interstate brokers and carriers require FMCSA registration; carriers also have a USDOT number. Check the current authority rather than relying on a logo or review badge.

Resolve the money and timing terms

Ask whether a carrier has accepted the shipment, what amount is due and when, which dates are estimates or commitments, what can change the total, and what happens if either party cancels. Monitor card transactions as FMCSA advises.

Questions people ask

How many car-shipping quotes should I compare?

Enough to identify the realistic market range and material term differences; three or more written comparisons are usually more informative than one low teaser.

Is a broker quote the carrier's final price?

Not necessarily. Ask whether a named carrier has accepted the load at that total and read the order's price-change language.

What numbers should an interstate company show?

FMCSA says both brokers and carriers receive an MC Docket number, while auto carriers also receive a USDOT number. Verify current records.

Does FMCSA registration mean the government endorses a company?

No. The federal complaint database explicitly says registration or displayed safety data is not a government endorsement.
